LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Chestnut Street Family YMCA has received a huge grant to help further its mission to serve the community.
The James Graham Brown Foundation awarded the facility $500,000 for facility upgrades and building renovations the YMCA said will support the expansion of several community programs.
“The Foundation believes in the mission of the Chestnut Street Family YMCA and the important resources it provides, including a wellness center, gymnasium and educational opportunities through immersive programs like the YMCA Black Achievers,” said Mason Rummel, president and CEO of The James Graham Brown Foundation. “The James Graham Brown Foundation believes in this work that lifts communities and elevates neighborhoods. This work is critical in creating a better and brighter future for all generations.”
Included in the building upgrades are brick sealing, painting and stained glass restorations for the historic sixth floor ballroom.
The funds will also help with the installation of a new teaching and banquet kitchen with counters, appliances, viewing technology and café seating. The YMCA said the upgraded kitchen will allow them to expand the Black Achievers program that would create a culinary arts track.
More importantly, the organization will be able to upgrade their eight-story elevator so members with disabilities will be able to access the entire facility.
Gary Cobbs, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Louisville called the support from the James Graham Brown Foundation an investment into the community.
Cobbs said the changes and upgrades will allow the Chestnut Street Family YMCA to expand its services to the surrounding neighborhood, benefitting the entire community.
