LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- Video surveillance from a local mall shows what could be the last recorded images of Ray Etheridge alive before the 12-year-old was stabbed to death in 2014.
After Louisville Metro Police detectives arrested and charged Joseph Cambron in connection to the crime, officials indicated surveillance video was instrumental in helping them catch a suspect, but did not elaborate.
The video is part of the evidence being used in the case against Cambron.
It shows he and Etheridge walking side by side toward an exit. There is no audio on the recordings, so it's unclear what the two are discussing.
Police said the two knew one another from time spent in and around Cherokee Park. Both, police said, were homeless.
The video also shows the two walking outside for a few seconds when Cambron appears to light a cigarette and the two walk out of frame.
The timeline between that moment and the time Etheridge was killed was not immediately clear, but in a police interview, Cambron explained how the killing unfolded.
He said Etheridge punched him and grabbed his wallet and Cambron said he reacted violently.
"Next thing I remember, the knife is in his chest and my hand is shaking and I pulled it out," Etheridge said. When asked by a detective if Etheridge said anything, Cambron replied, "He said he was sorry and I let him go."
