34-year-old man dies from 'possible overdose' while in Louisville Metro Corrections custody

“Loss of life is tragic and something that we never want to see happen."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A 34-year-old man died from a "possible overdose" early Sunday morning while in custody at Louisville Metro Corrections

Officers at Metro Corrections said they were alerted by an alarm that a box in an inmate housing area containing Narcan had been opened around 3:33 a.m.

Officers responded and said they found Richard Graham unresponsive from a "possible overdose."

Officers and medical staff started life saving measures. Shortly after, Louisville Metro EMS arrived and continued care. EMS said they were unable to revive Graham and he was pronounced dead at 4:12 a.m.

An internal investigation by the Metro Corrections Professional Standards Unit has been initiated. The Louisville Metro Police Public Integrity Unit is also investigating.

“Loss of life is tragic and something that we never want to see happen," Collins said. "The staff at Metro Corrections are going to keep working every day to combat contraband entering our facility, as well as find new innovative ways to assist our population with substance use disorder.”

Collins said he make sure mental health services were made available for incarcerated individuals who may have been impacted by this death and activated the Metro Corrections Peer Support Team making them available to all staff.

“I’m proud of the way our officers and medical staff responded quickly to the incident," Collins said.
