LMPD: Man injured after shooting self outside Mall St. Matthews

LMPD said a man shot himself as officers working off-duty were conducting a traffic stop.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — One person has been hurt after a reported shooting outside Mall St. Matthews.

According to assistant chief Emily McKinley, two LMPD officers were working off-duty when they conducted a stop in the mall’s parking lot around 7 p.m. Saturday.

McKinley said during the stop, a man who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Officers performed first aid and other life-saving measures.

The man was taken to an area hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Police said two others inside the vehicle were unharmed and cooperating with the investigation.

The Public Integrity Unit is handling the investigation since officers were conducting “law enforcement activity.”

LMPD confirms body cameras were on and the footage will be made publicly later.

“We are grateful no officers or other citizens were injured during this incident,” McKinley said.
