LOUISVILLE, Ky. — During a committee meeting on Tuesday, Metro Council members looked into where medical marijuana can be grown and sold in Jefferson County.
Kentucky banned dispensaries within 1,000 feet of a school or childcare facility.
But the council can add prohibited locations, like near parks or churches.
While they tabled the policy because members still had questions, they are facing a time crunch. The licensing period for the new businesses begins on July 1.
Without the regulations passed, those locations cannot be selected.
The business licenses are based on a lottery selection. In Jefferson County, only two dispensary locations will be granted licenses.
On Monday, a Jefferson County Board of Education Policy committee approved regulations for how to handle medical marijuana for students in school buildings.
The state law legalizing medical cannabis in Kentucky allows school boards to decide whether or not they want the drug on their campuses or not. If they do allow it, they have to adopt the state's language and gives guardians two options.
Guardians can either let a nurse or school staff member supervise their student taking the medicine, or the guardians can come to the school and do it themselves.
