LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville's Metro Council members will vote to adopt a resolution on Thursday that recognizes "Wrongful Conviction Day."

Councilwoman Shameka Parrish-Wright first introduced the resolution that passed unanimously out of committee on Sept. 25 a spokesperson for the Kentucky Innocence Project said.

They said exonerees and advocates with the Kentucky Innocence Project are also getting ready for the 2025 legislative session to argue for financial compensation to those wrongfully convicted.

Currently, Kentucky does not offer financial support for those that were exonerated and freed, and is one of 12 states that doesn't offer it. The spokesperson said so far, 22 people have been wrongly incarcerated in the state, and have faced a myriad of challenges including finances, housing and transportation, as well as education loss and healthcare issues.

A previous bill introduced by Rep. Jason Nemes in 2024 gained bipartisan support, but didn't pass the general assembly.
