National Eucharistic Pilgrimage walks through Louisville before making trek to Indiana

This is the first time ever the group has walked through Louisville to their final destination.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A group from the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage walked through Louisville on Tuesday.

The group is one of four others walking from different parts of the country.

The Pilgrims started their journey in Brownsville, Texas, that's along the southern border.

After hundreds of miles traveled, the group arrived in Louisville to tour Catholic Charities, a local non-profit, and continue their walk to Indianapolis for the 10th National Eucharistic Congress.

"We were really happy that we could be part of the journey, because we think it's important to focus both on spiritual work of the church, that the pilgrim is doing," Lisa DeJaco Crutcher, CEO of Catholic Charities, said. "They're doing such an amazing job of highlighting and bringing out all of the faith expression across the country but also the tangible work of the church."

According to Shayla Elm, a Perpetual Pilgrim, shared what she's realized during this long journey.

"Seeing the Catholic church in its breath across the country to see that the Catholic church is alive," Shayla said. "It's been truly, very inspiring to see all different ages, all different types of people to come out and walk with the lord."

Residents also got their chance to welcome the Pilgrims into Louisville.

Jennifer Oswald brought her kids for a chance to talk with and cheer on those walking with the lord.

"The pilgrims coming to Louisville is a really big deal because this is the first time our country has done this, where we've bought the Eucharist from four different points," she said.

On Tuesday evening, there is a planned send off at the Big Four Bridge.

There, Archbishop Shelton Fabre will hand off the Eucharist to the Archbishop in Indiana.

The pilgrimage is expected to arrive in Indianapolis on July 16.

Until then, Shayla made the mission of the group clear, "We are showing up and walking the streets because we want many people to come to know Jesus."
