LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- In the aftermath of a police shootout, the apartment complex caught in the crossfire remains damaged. The windows are knocked out, there’s glass on the ground, and bullet holes are everywhere.
“It sounded like a war outside,” said Chris Anderson who lives at 29th and St. Xavier in the Portland Neighborhood. “You could hear [bullets] going through the walls.”
Anderson was home with his girlfriend and 6-month-old baby when his building became the backdrop of a police shootout.
“I told Tori, [his girlfriend] ‘get the baby, get down on the ground’ and then I tried to position myself between the pops that kept going off and trying to see what was going on.”
Police ultimately shot and killed Demonjhea Jordan, 21. Police believe he was the suspect who robbed a Metro PCS about a mile away.
The employee from the store told WHAS11 News that the suspect waved a gun in his face before taking money from the cash register, then threatened him not to call police and told the employee, ‘sorry, but I needed the money’ as he took off.
We looked through Jordan's history and found charges in Indiana from September of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and carrying a handgun without a license. Court documents said he pleaded guilty to both charges. The case was closed earlier this month.
“I definitely offer prayers to the family, we don't know what the family goes through in a disaster like this, he's still a Child of God,” said James Clarkson who owns the apartment building that got shot up.
He said he's working hard to clean up the mess. One neighbor showed WHAS11 News bullet holes he found inside his home.
“Door hinges off the wall, glass all around the building, holes in the walls, multiple shots, it's pretty big,” Clarkson explained.
Clarkson said as hectic as it seemed outside, he's thankful no one inside the complex was hurt.
