Coroner identifies 24-year-old man killed in New Albany crash

Authorities believe excessive speed was a factor in the fatal crash.

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — A 24-year-old man is dead after a serious crash in southern Indiana on Sunday.

Crews from the New Albany Police Department and the New Albany Fire Department were dispatched to the 3700 block of Klerner Lane around 8 p.m. for the crash.

When first responders arrived, they saw a blue Ford Escape had flipped upside down.

The driver, later identified as Gavin Byrd of New Albany, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only person in the vehicle.

According to a preliminary investigation, excessive speed is likely a factor in the deadly crash.

New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey said the vehicle was driving northbound prior to the crash when it left the roadway and struck a number of mailboxes and vegetation.

The crash remains under investigation at this time.
