LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Darrell McGinnis has been preparing to open his second business venture for more than a year.
The Park DuValle Sandwich Shop officially opened for business on Monday after a successful soft opening on Saturday.
“I really didn’t know when we were going to open,” he explained. “I just kinda pushed it on out there and said it’s time. Now is always the right time.”
McGinnis said his idea of bringing a sandwich shop to the area stemmed from thoughts he had about an unoccupied space next to his business. He purchased the building which his McGinnis Heating and Cooling company initially rented about 9 years ago.
The first thing that came to mind, he said, “there’s nothing to eat around here.”
He pointed out the limited number of restaurants and lack of options when it comes to making decent food choices.
“We have a lot of liquor stores, salons [and] barbershops – things that we need, but common, so I wanted to diversify and bring something that folks need,” he explained. “Everybody loves to eat!”
The PD Sandwich Shop was born.
McGinnis said community response to the new restaurant has been positive.
“The last two days that we have been open – the soft opening and the grand opening – people have been receptive to the idea,” he said. “Just to see something on this side of town that looks aesthetically pleasing the way it does, I’m proud of that.”
McGinnis hopes his new restaurant will inspire others to open up more homegrown restaurants in the area.
“For me to visualize something in the neighborhood that’s going to provide [something] positive, it means a lot to me.
The restaurant offers a variety of sandwiches, flatbreads, salads and soups. Customers also have the option of dining in or take-out.
PD Sandwich Shop also offers free Wi-Fi for customers.
The restaurant is located at 3502 Cane Run Road. They are open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and closed Sundays.
