Okolona-area elementary school latest to get new playground

This is all a part of JCPS's $2 million investment to bring new playgrounds to 20 schools across the Metro.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An all-new playground has opened at Hartstern Elementary School in Louisville's Okolona neighborhood on Wednesday.

It's the latest Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) school to get a brand-new playground.

This is all a part of JCPS's $2 million investment to bring new playgrounds to 20 schools across the Metro. This playground at Hartstern Elementary is now the 7th to open.

Staff at Hartstern Elementary said this playground has been a long time coming and students could hardly contain their excitement.

"Our students have been waiting all year for this playground. We had a basketball court, we had just pavement to play on but now we have a whole playground with equipment for the kids to come out and enjoy," Laquetta Carter, Hartstern Elementary principal, said. They've been super excited and waiting for it so we're just glad to have this new playground and open it up for all our students here at Hartstern."

JCPS expects all 20 playgrounds to be completed by March 2024.
