Kentucky Court of Appeals rules Odd Fellows building can be torn down

The ruling says the building shouldn't be deemed a landmark which would allow its demolition.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled on Monday a historic building in downtown Louisville can be torn down.

Preservationists have worked to save the Odd Fellows building at South 3rd Street and West Muhammad Ali Boulevard for several years.

The Omni Hotel owns the building, dating back to the late 1800s, and has said it wants to use the site for a future project.

In 2021, the Metro Council voted to remove the historic landmark status, but the Louisville Historical League challenged it.

A judge had sided with the League, but the Court of Appeals has overturned that decision.

The ruling says the building shouldn't be deemed a landmark which would allow its demolition.

The building, built in the late 19th century, has been home to several different organizations during its long history, including the Odd Fellows group, Parking Authority of River City and most recently Omni Hotel, which set up its offices in the building during the construction of its downtown hotel.
