ORANGE COUNTY, Ind. — Indiana State Police (ISP) are investigating after an incarcerated person died in custody in southern Indiana.
On Saturday, the Orange County Sheriff's Department released a statement on social media informing the community that an incarcerated person at the Orange County Jail died in custody early that morning.
Authorities identified the woman as 54-year-old Jeanne Ross.
On Tuesday, ISP said officers with the sheriff's office found Ross unresponsive in her cell while delivering her breakfast Saturday morning at around 5 a.m.
According to a news release, the officers began providing medical assistance and requested EMS, but emergency officials were unable to save Ross. She was pronounced dead by the Orange County Coroner's Office.
State police said Ross was transported from the Hendricks County Jail to the Orange County Jail on Dec. 26, 2023 on a warrant for failure to appear.
The death investigation remains ongoing as authorities await results from an autopsy and toxicology report.
