Police said the 33-year-old man had been drinking at a bar when he struck and killed another man in the 2500 block of Taylorsville Road Sunday night.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide after a man was struck and killed near Bowman Field Sunday night.

Police responded to the 2500 block of Taylorsville Road around 9:45 p.m.

In LMPD’s preliminary investigation, an SUV driven by 33-year-old Paul Heiniger, was headed down Taylorsville Road when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a man who they believed many have been walking in the roadway or standing on the shoulder.

The victim, later identified as 50-year-old Michael Winters, died from blunt force injuries, according to the Jefferson County Coroner.

When officers arrived at the scene, they saw Heiniger sitting next to a lifeless Winters.

Heiniger told police he had been drinking at the “Shot Bar” and had two gin and tonics. According to the arrest citation, investigators could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from Heiniger and they said he was “unsteady on his feet and had “glossy eyes.”

Heiniger reportedly swayed during both field sobriety tests and couldn’t maintain balance during the instruction phase.

Upon further search of Heiniger, police discovered a silver container in his front pocket with nine marijuana joints and two others in his back pocket.

In addition to the vehicular homicide charge, Heiniger also faces possession of marijuana.

He was booked and taken to Metro Corrections.
