LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It's all hands on deck for one of professional sports' major attractions: The PGA Championship.
The annual golf tournament is coming to Louisville's historic Valhalla Golf Club in May.
Friday was one of two chances for thousands of event volunteers to pick up their uniforms, credentials and meet with staff. Officials distributed the gear at Christian Academy of Louisville, where the gym was packed with boxes filled with everything volunteers will need that week.
"This is the first touchpoint they've had for this championship -- the first opportunity they've had to get their uniform, talk to people, talk to staff, talk to fellow volunteers. It's fantastic, it's just so cool to see," Kenny Martin, manager of volunteer operations for the 2024 PGA Championship, said. "They're not only giving us their energy, but they're giving us their time. They're giving us their resources."
Described by Martin as "3,100 of the most passionate golf fans in Louisville," volunteers lined up in bunches with smiles on their faces -- including Lindsay Gahm, the granddaughter of Valhalla Golf Club founder Dwight Gahm.
"I've always been here, gone to all the tournaments," Gahm said. "It's just a great experience. I'm a big golfer, and any chance we get to go out to see people play out of our home golf course [is] pretty awesome."
When asked what makes Valhalla so special, Gahm told WHAS11, "It's just so beautiful. You're out in nature. There are no houses. It's just a pure championship golf course. Getting to watch the best players in the world play it is once in a lifetime, really."
Uniform and credential distribution is happening Friday at Christian Academy of Louisville until 8 p.m. for registered volunteers, and then again Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
