LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Low-income families having trouble with heating bills will be able to apply for help beginning Nov. 5.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, LIHEAP, will begin to accept applications for the program’s fall subsidy program.

The fall subsidy will provide households with a one-time benefit depending on the housing category fuel type used for heating and income level.

The benefit can be applied toward home heating costs for electric, natural gas, propane, coal, wood or fuel oil.

Benefits would be paid directly to the household’s energy vendor – like LG&E for example.

If you’ve received help from LIHEAP before, it would not affect a household’s eligibility.

In Louisville and Jefferson County, the fall subsidy would be available through the Office of Resilience and Community Services. Those interested do have to make an appointment in advance to apply.

They do note that to receive assistance, households must meet eligibility requirements – including income eligibility up to and including 150% of the federal poverty guidelines.

MSD is also offering help through their Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program.

The EWRAP program provides residents in Jefferson County with a 30% discount on wastewater charges and the consent decree surcharge.

Eligibility will also include households at or below 150% of the federal poverty guidelines, proof of an active utility account with Louisville Water Company and MSD.

MSD says the enrollment period is for new and renewing MSD discount program clients.

If you are a senior citizen 65 or older with a gross household income of $35,000 or less annually, you could be eligible for MSD’s Senior Citizen Discount Program.

You are urged to submit your MSD bill with your LIHEAP documentation to see if you qualify.

Families who are eligible for the programs can apply for one or both with one single appointment.

Jefferson County residents can call the automated scheduler at (502) 991-8391 or online at Louisvilleky.cascheduler.com.
