LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The Sherman Minton Bridge first opened in 1962 and in modern times, more than 90,000 drivers use it daily to cross the Ohio River.
A $90 million renovation project is in the works to keep the bridge standing for another 30 plus years.
During a Tuesday meeting, many listened to the construction plans and weighted in on traffic patterns during construction, set to begin in 2021.
Andrea Brady, spokesperson for the Sherman Minton Renewal Project, says they are offering 6 different traffic options ranging from minimal lane closures to a full closure of the bridge.
“We want people to give us their opinions. What will they like? What will they not like? What would work for them as a resident? What would work for them as a business? Ultimately, we want to throw that feedback into the mix so the construction teams can do the best job possible,” she said.
Brady says construction could take from 15 months to three years but however, there isn’t any talk of making the Sherman Minton a toll bridge.
The next open house is scheduled for July 25 in New Albany at the Calumet Club from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
