Public defender to be appointed to man charged in Detective Mengedoht's death

The courtroom was filled with officers who wanted to support Mengedoht as the man charged in the detective's death appeared before a judge.

(WHAS11) -- Former MSD employee Roger Burdette walked into a courtroom packed with officers on Jan. 7 showing their support for Detective Deidre Mengedoht.

Burdette is charged in the death of Metro Police Detective Mengedoht on Christmas Eve after his semi hit her cruiser during a traffic stop on I-64 near downtown.

Burdette maintains his innocence but admitted he was on prescription medications at the time of the crash.

He's since been fired from MSD. Burdette will now get a public defender and is due back in court on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

Detective Mengedoht leaves behind a 9-year-old son. The community raising more than $65,000 in his name.
