Public vigil held for slain Louisville man

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A Louisville family is in mourning on Father's Day after a father of seven was gunned down earlier this week.

Charles Cowherd's family held a public vigil tonight as they continue to search for answers in his violent death.

Those who knew Charles Cowherd described him as the ultimate family man.

Coming from a family of 10 his sisters said he was even a father figure to them.

However they say a gunman's decision has left them with a void in their life they may never replace.

“He was a good daddy,” Cowherd’s daughter said. “He took care of all of us.”

When Charles Cowherd's family talks about him, their love is obvious.

“He had the goofiest personality,” Shavon Cowherd said. “If you knew him, he roasted you before no matter who you were.”

However through the smiles, it's hard for them to hold back their pain for a man taken from them too soon.

“It hurts a lot,” Charles Cowherd, Jr said. “I can’t even talk to my daddy. I can’t say nothing to my daddy. I can’t even give him a card. He’s gone and never come back.”

“I watch the news,” Raven Parker said. “I live in this city. I would’ve never thought that this would be me burying my brother.”

“Physically, there’s no reason to sugar coat it, he can’t be with you all anymore,” Christopher 2X said. “Spiritually he can always be with you all.”

This Father's Day instead of laughing and smiling with Cowherd, his friends and family showed him love by releasing these balloons and airing their pleas to his killer.

“He needs to go on and turn himself in,” Cowherd Jr. said. “Look what he’s doing. He’s seeing my sisters’ cry. Look what my sisters did. There ain’t nothing else to say except for look at my sisters. I need him!”

“The killing has got to stop, it’s got to stop,” Terry Beard said. “You don’t have to answer to me, but they have the power to answer too, and they have to stop this. They’ve got to stop. It’s got to stop!”

Cowherd's death is receiving some national publicity as well.

Rapper Master P, who tipped off last year's Dirt Bowl celebrations, heard about his murder and had a plaque overnighted to Cowherd's family.
