NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WHAS11) – A groundbreaking happened on Thursday morning, May 31, for a new garden recognizing the Underground Railroad in New Albany.
The construction will start in the back of 2nd Baptist Church on Main Street.
The church was built in the late 1840s and was an important site in the Underground Railroad system which helped slaves move to freedom.
The garden will be an area where the community can come together to review the history of the church and their mission of equality.
“It gives me a sense of hope for our world. Hopefully, people come together and say it's an important message we don’t want to lose, that more than ever today we need to hear a message of standing up against injustice,” Jerry Finn, treasurer of Friends of Town Clock Church, said.
A gazebo will also be built and organizers expect to complete the project in the next week.
