'The stakes of this election are too high.' | Rep. McGarvey calls for Biden to drop reelection bid

Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-3, urges President Joe Biden to suspend presidential campaign.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rep. Morgan McGarvey (D-3) is calling for President Joe Biden to step aside in the presidential race.

"That’s why there is no joy in the recognition he should not be our nominee in November," McGarvey wrote in a statement released July 19.

"The stakes of this election are too high and we can’t risk the focus of the campaign being anything other than Donald Trump, his MAGA extremists, and the mega-wealthy dark money donors who are prepared to destroy our path toward a more perfect union with Trump’s Project 2025. We can’t allow them to succeed," he said.

McGarvey told WHAS11 News in an interview that "this is not anti-Joe Biden" and praised the president's leadership. He added that if Biden was the Democratic nominee, he would support his bid.

"We have got to have Democrats in the best possible chance to defeat Donald Trump and his version of MAGA extremism," McGarvey said.

The Biden campaign is steadfast that the president will remain in the race, and said he will be back on the campaign trail next week.

McGarvey emphasized that the Democrats will rally behind whoever is on the Democratic ticket.

"Our nominee is going to reflect that," McGarvey said. "We're going to come together, we're going to be unified."
