LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg’s mother, Ruth Greenberg, died on Thursday after a "brief illness." She was 78.

Greenberg posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he received the news about his mother after he left the State of the City address.

According to a statement from the Mayor's Office, Greenberg and his family are "grateful" to the health care team that provided Ruth with care.

He said his mother was an "amazing person who made a positive impact on so many people’s lives."

The 51st mayor said him and his family want to thank everyone for their support during this time as they say goodbye to an "incredible mother, grandmother, wife and person."

"Life is too short," Greenberg said. "Let’s all live every day to the fullest."

The final words of his State of the City address were, "Mom, I love you."

University of Louisville President Dr. Kim Schatzel said she was "deeply saddened" to learn of her passing.

"Not only was Ruth well-known throughout our community, she had longtime ties to the University of Louisville, including serving as associate dean for medical education, and loved being part of the Cardinal family," she said. "Our condolences go out to my friend, Mayor Craig Greenberg, and his entire family during this difficult time. This is a great loss for our city and for those who knew and worked with Ruth at UofL.”
