Kentucky man's wife thought he was 'messing with her' after winning $500,000 on lottery

"I figured it was right, but I couldn't believe it," he said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An Allen County man and his wife may be going on a family trip to Disney this year after winning big on a Kentucky Lottery scratch-off ticket.

The Scottsville man, who wished to remain anonymous, spent $20 on a "When It's Gold Outside" ticket the day after Christmas while stopping at the Shell gas station on Scottsdale Road in Glasgow. He picked the ticket because of it being the number 18, the same date his grandson's birthday.

He told lottery officials he scratched off the ticket as soon as he got back to his truck.

"I looked at it three or four times and I thought, 'this can't be right,'" he said. The man had won on all 20 spots on the ticket, winning the top prize of $500,000.

The man drove to another store down the road to check his ticket and confirm he had in fact won.

"I figured it was right, but I couldn't believe it," he said. "It's hard to explain, but it's a good feeling."

His wife couldn't believe he had won, saying she thought he was messing with her.

"He was joking around with me and asked, 'If we won the lottery, what would we do?'" she said. "I said, 'No you did not. Just come home.'"

To her surprise, and relief, a few days later her husband received a check for $357,500 after taxes.

"I've been a nervous wreck ever since he told me," she said.

The couple told lottery officials they plan to use their winnings to pay off bills and then may plan a family trip to Disney.
