LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A second man has died after an officer-involved shooting in the Buechel neighborhood Sunday, April 22, according to the coroner.
Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said 32-year-old Orestes Romaro Nieblas died of multiple gunshot wounds. Thirty-seven-year-old Miguel Escalona Vivas also died from a perforating gunshot wound of the torso.
The shooting incident happened near Bardstown Road and Bashford Manor Lane just after 4 p.m.
According to LMPD’s preliminary investigation, Vivas and Nieblas were involved in some type of altercation.
Police said Nieblas was shot multiple times by Vivas.
Witnesses near the scene saw the altercation in progress and then notified West Buechel police officer, Keith Walz, pointing out Vivas.
Police said the West Buechel officer was a short distance from the scene but caught up and confronted Vivas along with off-duty Hurstbourne Acres officer Gary Phelps.
Vivas was apparently armed and during the confrontation, shots were fired with Vivas being hit by police.
He and Nieblas were transported to University Hospital.
Vivas was pronounced dead on Monday.
Nieblas had been in critical condition since Sunday’s shooting.
