City completes two-way conversion of East Jefferson Street near downtown

Mayor Craig Greenberg said the improvements will make roadways in the city safer and efficient.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Navigating the streets near downtown Louisville has become a little easier following a major project.

Metro Public Works said the two-way conversion project of East Jefferson Street has been completed.

The $3.2 million project, which began construction in March 2024, allows drivers to travel East Jefferson from Brook Street to Baxter Avenue.

Many of the upgrades included in the conversion are rebuilt traffic signals from 1970s vintage traffic controllers, new traffic poles in areas of both overhead and underground utilities. Crews also restriped the surface of the mile-long corridor.

“One of our many responsibilities as elected officials and public servants, is to provide our residents and those who visit our great city with safer and more efficient roadways,” said Mayor Greenberg. “The completion of this two-way conversion project is another example of my administration’s commitment to making Louisville a safer and healthier city.”

Cones are set on the left side of East Jefferson Street as the street is expected to turn into two-way on Oct. 6, 2024.

Public Works said the East Jefferson Project is the continuation of Phase I of converting one-way streets into two-way traffic.

A portion of South Third Street between Main and Market Streets and between Liberty and Broadway were converted to two-way traffic in 2018 and 2019.

The two-way conversion of East Jefferson Street will take effect on Oct. 6.
