LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)--Hamilton is the smash hit on Broadway coming to Louisville in 2019.
But you don't have to wait until then to see some of it live.
A group of students from Olmsted Academy North is discovering the magic of the music.
The music is catchy with a powerful message, not just on stage but in life.
Most of these middle school students from Louisville's Olmsted Academy North have never seen a Broadway stage production.
Now this group, known as the ambassadors, is performing hits from Hamilton.
The blockbuster musical tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton, a man who overcame a challenging start to life.
Something teacher Gordon Crawford says many of his students can connect with.
“They could all relate to what it means to actually stand up for yourself and going after something that is not given to you and fighting the odds,” said Crawford.
Olmsted North is a priority school that’s seen struggles in the past.
Much of the population is on free and reduced lunch.
“These kids need to know they are not stuck in their environment,” said Crawford.
The music helping to teach history and confidence with each lyric, rap and dance move.
All lead by a teacher who wanted to open his student's hearts to a new experience.
Middle school boys finding something incredible in what they first thought was impossible.
“They have taken on the challenge of accepting something new in their life and actually believe in the lyrics,” said Crawford.
And believing in themselves.
They perform the songs for local groups and their teacher says he hopes to figure out a way take the students to see Hamilton when it opens in 2019 in Louisville.
