Senator Mitch McConnell reacts to second 'apparent assassination attempt' of Trump

McConnell said he is “grateful” for the safety of the current Republican presidential nominee.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell speaking out after another apparent assassination attempt involving former President Donald Trump.

McConnell said he is “grateful” for the safety of the current Republican presidential nominee.

“There is no place for political violence in our country, and those responsible for it must be held to account,” he said in an X post on Sunday. “I hope and expect USSS and the FBI will conduct a thorough, swift and transparent investigation.”

Trump was at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida when the incident happened.

Secret Service agents were a few holes up from where Trump was playing when they noticed the muzzle of an AK-style rifle sticking through shrubs lining the course – about 400 yards away.

The gunman fled the scene in an SUV after he was fired upon by an agent. They said he left behind the gun and two backpacks, a scope and a GoPro camera.

That person was found in a neighboring county and arrested.

Trump had previous attempt on his life nine weeks ago during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania where a bullet grazed his ear.

He said after the incident via email he was "safe and well" and that he will "never surrender."
