'We're just really proud our kids': Seneca High School's Health Academy students earn medical scrubs

This was the first time the school held a ceremony for giving students their scrubs, saying they wanted to celebrate the achievement.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On Tuesday, 130 sophomores from Seneca High School's Health Academy earned their medical scrubs.

The program is one of dozens throughout Jefferson County Public Schools that helps prepare students for graduation.

One of the teachers involved with the program told WHAS11 News how important the school's academy is to students, as well as how crucial it is throughout the community.

"We've just expanded from two instructors to three this year, because we had such great numbers," educator Sarah Buchanan said. "The scrubs are recognizable in the community; if I'm wearing mine out and about on a Tuesday, it's really recognizable thing this health science program here. Seneca's a strong leader in the health community here."

This was the first time the school held a ceremony for giving students their scrubs, saying they wanted to celebrate the achievement.

"The students I talk to throughout the day, they really have goals," Buchanan said. "Some of them are already working in healthcare at assisted living nursing homes and doing internships with UofL and Norton. So we're just really proud our kids, they go to Masonic Homes, they do a lot of great things here."

"Masonic Homes of Kentucky," which is a partner of the program, helps pay for the scrubs and hires several students every year to work in its senior care facilities.
