LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Authorities are investigating a small plane crash that sent three people to the hospital Friday afternoon.

St. Matthews Police asked the community to avoid the intersection of Breckenridge Lane and Kresge Way and around Baptist Health East as all roads in the area were shut down.

Darrell Watson, Sr., the vice president and CEO of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, said a Piper PA 28 aircraft tried to land on a runway at Bowman Field. Watson said the the aircraft descended onto Breckenridge Lane and made contact with a vehicle.

St. Matthews Mayor and Fire Information Officer Rick Tonini said the two that were in the plane went to UofL Hospital and the person in the vehicle went to Baptist Health East.

Chief Barry Wilkerson confirmed everyone involved has non life-threatening injuries. He said the two that were in the plane were a male pilot instructor and a female flight student, and that the pilot is stable at the hospital.

He added the passenger in the vehicle was treated and released from Baptist Health East.

John Scor, the regional airport manager from Clark County, Indiana, arrived and talked with the WHAS11 News crew on scene. He believed there was an inflight emergency and they had to find a flat place to land.

"Realize the airplane is moving about 100 miles an hour and there's certainly some stress involved at that time," he said. "So, their decisions were made quickly and that decision, in my opinion, was a good one."

Tonini said it will take a while to get the intersection back in working order.

"The plane took out the entire electrical stop light infrastructure for the intersection, which means it has two major polls of strings holding up the lights and they've been completely taken down to the ground," he said.

The mayor added some fuel leaked, and hazmat cleared it before it got into any systems.
