Solar panels to be installed on three Louisville buildings as city invests in energy efficiency solutions

The city is aiming to have 100% clean energy by 2040.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Four years after a Renewable Energy Resolution was passed by Metro Council, the City of Louisville is taking more steps to have clean energy throughout the city.

Three of the city’s buildings will feature solar panels through its Solarize Louisville program.

Those buildings are the Southwick Community Center in Park DuValle, Iroquois Library in Beechmont and Fire Engine 8 in Klondike.

“Once this installation is complete, it'll produce enough solar energy to meet about half the needs of these three buildings it will save Louisville Metro Government about $18,000 every year," Mayor Craig Greenberg said.

Greenberg calls the Solarize Louisville project a great example when it comes to city-wide collaboration.

In addition to saving the city money on energy costs, it will also create jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“The installation of solar panels on the Southwick Community Center is a progressive and cost-efficient solution to bringing renewable energy to District 1's one and only community center,” Metro Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins said in a statement. “I'm proud to stand alongside Mayor Greenberg, REAL, and Metro Parks & Recreation to announce Southwick’s new technology. With the cost savings of approximately $8,337.92 a year, that is funding that can go right back into the Southwick Community Center for additional resource and service upgrades for our community. In addition to all the positive benefits solar panels provide, this is a wonderful investment that I fully support at Southwick Community Center and West Louisville.”

Metro Government is aiming to have 100% clean energy and zero-emissions community-wide by the year 2040.
