LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville is historically known as "The Gateway to the South."

Now, Southern Living has named Louisville one of the 25 best cities in the South.

"Come May this place is overrun with people clamoring to see the 'Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,' but during the rest of year, you'll find a lively riverfront city that offers a little something for all," Southern Living Reporter Tara Massouleh McCay wrote.

McCay noted that you could learn about baseball bats at the Louisville Slugger Museum and visit bourbon distilleries to your "heart's content," but she recommends something different -- taking in the "abundance of art and historic architecture." She specifically suggests taking a walk through an Olmsted-designed park and getting to know the city's neighborhoods.

Some notable attractions the Derby City offers include the Louisville Mega Cavern, the Louisville Zoo, the Kentucky Science Center, and Waterfront Park. Louisville is also home to many parks across the Metro and is only a few hours drive from other outdoor destinations like Bernheim Forest, Mammoth Cave and Red River Gorge.

Louisville was ranked 17th on the list. Other cities listed in the magazine were Lexington, Kentucky; Nashville, Tennessee; Savannah, Georgia; and Charleston, South Carolina.
