'I have had a great run': President of Spalding University retires after 25 years with the college

Tori Murden McClure said during her retirement she wants to learn how to weld, learn how to sail, build more boats and more.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After 25 years at the college and 14 years at its helm, Tori Murden McClure, President of Spalding University in Louisville, is retiring.

McClure said in a statement that she plans on retiring at the end of this academic year, in June 2024.

"The university and I have had a great run, and serving Spalding has been the honor of a lifetime," McClure said. "I plan to work diligently in the coming months to create a smooth transition for whomever follows.

McClure said she will miss the students, the Spalding staff, her presidential colleagues, and most of all, every member of the Spalding University Leadership Team.

She said she doesn't plan on leaving Louisville, Ky. and will focus on the people in her life and some life-long hobbies and goals during retirement.

"Whatever is next, I want to get a life, learn to weld, learn to sail, build more boats, read more books, spend more time with friends, and to enjoy more of everything," McClure said.

McClure was the first woman and first American to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also the first woman and first American to travel overland to the geographic South Pole, skiing 750 miles from the ice shelf to the pole.

Prior to her work at Spalding University, McClure worked for the boxer and humanitarian Muhammad Ali.
