LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Motorists on a western Kentucky highway encountered slippery - and smelly - conditions Monday morning.
A large truck carrying chicken waste on U.S. Highway 62 in Marshall County spilled various discarded bits about 8:30 a.m. The roadway between I-24 Calvert City Exit 7 and Kentucky Dam became slick and the traffic pattern was interrupted for hours.
According to a news release from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), "the chicken offal created slick, as well as smelly, driving conditions" along U.S. 62 from mile marker 8.830 at the I-24 Exit 27 ramps, extending eastward through the U.S. 641 interchange, to mile marker 12 near Kentucky Dam. The KYTC Marshall County Highway Maintenance Crew spread salt along the spill to help dissolve the greasy waste and provide traction.
Work was completed about 10:30 a.m. It could take several hours for the salt to completely remove the waste from the roadway, and the smell may linger for days.
KYTC District 1 is asking anyone with information about the truck that caused the spill to contact Kentucky State Police, Marshall County Sheriff's Department or KYTC District 1. Chicken waste is often hauled in open-top trucks, which allows the waste to escape.
KYTC personnel have been called four times in the last several months to respond to spilled chicken waste.
