LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The duPont Manual Stadium gate is now officially a historic landmark after offering 100 years of football games and high school memories.
The first game played at the historic stadium happened on Oct. 18, 1924.
Over the years, the stadium has hosted major teams, from University of Kentucky, to University of Louisville, and even the Fort Knox Tankers.
The historic fencing and gate around the stadium was built in one day; it was a joint effort from alumni, students and staff.
Manual alum Mike McDaniel wrote a book titled "Stand Up and Cheer" about the history of the school, including the stadium, and he was there for the dedication.
"Its hard to believe in 1947 for the Male-Manual game the record crowd was 18,000, they packed 18,000 people in this place," McDaniel said. "Our PA address, our announcer had to get on top of the press box to announce the game because the press box was full."
The whole stadium was considered for landmark status, but improvements to the facility need to be made, including adding turf before next season.
