New Hometown Hero banner honors late Louisville musician Stephen 'Static Major' Garrett

Garrett was a member of the group "Playa" and scored his first No. 1 hit posthumously with "Lollipop" with Lil' Wayne in 2008 which also won a Grammy in 2009.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Another Louisville legend has now been honored with a Hometown Hero banner.

Stephen “Static Major” Garrett is the newest member to join the famous faces across the city.

The late Grammy award-award winning singer, songwriter and producer was a member of the Louisville-based R&B trio Playa.

Their 1998 single, “Cheers 2 U” made it to the top 40 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Garrett also wrote hits like “Pony” for Ginwine, as well as “Rock The Boat” and “Are You That Somebody?” by Aaliyah.

“[It’s] long overdue. It should have been up a long time ago, but that’s neither here nor there,” Alexis Garrett, his niece, said. “To the world he’s ‘Static Major’, but to us, he’s Uncle Steve, daddy’s son – so just to see him be appreciated in the city he loved and was born in is such a blessing.”

Garrett died in 2008 but posthumously scored his first No. 1 song with Lil’ Wayne’s “Lollipop." The song would go on to win the Best Rap Song Grammy Award in 2009.
