Summer programs provide stability, opportunities for at-risk youth

When school's out, local organizations provide opportunities for at-risk kids through camps and programs. But they can't do it alone.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- For many children, school is their one source of stability, and maybe the one place they can count on for meals.

But what happens to the city's most vulnerable kids when they are out of the classroom for summer break. We took a closer look at services available for them and how you can help make a difference

“We see a lot of kids that don't have stability in their lives and we are a place that can remain stable for them,” Mayghin Levine with the Cabbage Patch Settlement House.

The Cabbage Patch Settlement House in Old Louisville helps at-risk kids with after-school programs and summer camps. They have no-cost and low-cost options for all kids and staff members say they love being a guiding force for kids who need them the most.

“I get to serve a role in these kid’s lives and see them make something amazing of themselves and out of their experiences and that means a lot,” said Levine.

Downtown, those with Baxter community center are also looking to help kids this summer.

“Baxter Community Center Parks and rec site is one of Louisville's open programs. So our program will run from 10-7 and we provide numerous opportunities for at-risk kids that couldn't necessarily afford the weekly summer camp program,” said Rene Douglas with Baxter Community Center.

The center wants to give every child a chance to succeed and have fun over the summer while staying safe

“We see a lot of crime going on and I feel if they are in here with us engaged in activity they are less likely to be out there offending,” said Douglas.

“It's better for them to be in schools and community centers where there is learning and teachers and adult supervision than in other places where there isn't,” said John Marshall with Jefferson County Public Schools.

That's why Jefferson County Public Schools offers free summer camps where kid are provided meals.

“It's about access and opportunity,” said Marshall.

The free summer camps offer educational opportunities as well as fencing lessons, photography, hip-hop, and yoga.

“We always worry about our children when they are out and about. We rather see them and lay eyes on them and be working with them than not know what they are up to. Some of our students are doing great things but some of our students might be in places they may not need to be,” said Marshall.

Reaching children - and making the summer count. Now all they need is you.

These programs are wonderful but they take support from the community. The groups are looking for business partners, sponsors, volunteers, and donations. There is still time to sign up and still time to help out! Click on the following links to learn more about each program and how you can get involved.
