YMCA hosts swim clinics aimed to encourage water safety during summer

The free event is an introductory class for children up to 12 years old to teach them water safety for any summer swimming.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The heatwave is hammering Kentucky and southern Indiana, and it is the perfect time to go for a swim to cool down.

The YMCA is offering free safety around water clinics to make sure families are safe this summer.

Saturday’s clinic at the Southeast Family YMCA on Six Mile Lane was the first of four being held.

The free event was an introductory class for children up to 12 years old to teach them water safety for any summer swimming.

“We’ve seen an increase in drownings over the last couple of years and we’re really trying to fight that in the summertime,” Dacia Berry, aquatics director, said. “We know a lot more people are wanting to enjoy vacation, go in the ocean, the lakes, the water – we live near a river, we’re a river city. We’re just trying to encourage families to be more safe around water and have those tools they need to be safe.”

The next free clinic is scheduled at Oldham County Family YMCA on June 24 and it begins at 6:30 p.m.
