LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) - Newly released 911 calls are providing new information in the case of the Portland teenager stabbed to death during a fight. Nineteen-year-old Tiffany James stabbed 14-year-old Madison Branch and is claiming self-defense.
Several people dialed 911 during and after the fight but one call, in particular, stood out from the rest.
"911 what is your emergency?" a 911 operator asked.
"We need an EMS at Speedway on Duncan," Debra James said. "I need them now."
On the phone with a 911 operator James, told the operator her daughter, Tiffany James, had just stabbed another girl.
"How old is your daughter?” the operator asked.
"She's 19," James said.
The operator asked, "Is the girl that stabbed her still there?"
"My daughter's the one that stabbed her," James replied.
Debra James told police her youngest daughter was being attacked and Tiffany came to her sister's rescue.
Hours later Debra James described the incident to police.
"Everything just got carried away," she said.
Tiffany James told police at the scene she stabbed Branch in self-defense. She said Branch has been bullying her younger sister for more than a year and on the day of the fight, Branch attacked her.
Her mother said the same thing at police headquarters later that night.
“I just know that all of this is nonsense. It was Tiffany's self-defense. Tiffany, that's why she carries a knife because of people down there," Debra James said.
A short time later police told Debra James they are charging her daughter and booking her in jail.
Tiffany James has been in the custody of Metro Corrections ever since and is expected back in court next month.
