Taylor County High School opens student-run coffee shop

The coffee shop is part of the district's business and entrepreneurial program.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A new coffee shop opened in Taylor County on Wednesday, but not where you would first expect it.

"Harden Coffee" opened for business in Taylor County High School on Wednesday. It is part of the district's business and entrepreneurship program.

The program combines learning with real-life experience by placing the responsibility of running a real business on the students.

"It's a hundred percent student ran," co-owner Justin Harden said. "So there's a manager, there's stock crews, there's the whole nine yards. It's all student ran and it's only open to students and teachers."

Students will run the coffee shop for their first two periods of the day.

The district posted they had a realistic hiring process, requiring students to provide a resume and a cover letter and the co-owners determined staff positions after that.

"You get to learn about all kinds of things but like running the business; like you get to put yourself in a place of authority and learning that responsibility is so important because it's something you can use all throughout your life," co-owner Iris Harden said.

One of the other student-run businesses within the school is the Cardinal Kroger program.
