LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Celebrating the success of the Summer Works program, Mayor Greg Fischer gave us an update on this year’s participants.
More than 110 local companies took part in hiring more than 4,200 young people between the ages of 16 to 21, many of them low income.
Those individuals found jobs in everything from health care to amusement parks to banks and hotels, even local police and fire departments.
“I rode on the firetruck. I went on runs. I’ve seen like, how life really works from a different point of view. Not as a child point of view, but a firefighter point of view. It has really taught me self-discipline and how to wake up and go to work every day and go to school and stay focused and remain positive throughout it because it can get challenging sometimes,” one participant said.
That last young man you heard from worked at GE over the summer.
He's been hired on permanently and will continue working at Appliance Park while pursuing a mechanical engineering degree at Jefferson Community & Technical College.
