LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- Hardin County Schools said a situation outside John Hardin High School placed three schools on lockdown on Wednesday, March 28.
New Highland Elementary, Bluegrass Middle, and John Hardin High Schools were placed on lockdown when the situation called for law enforcement. The situation was only outside of the John Hardin High School. The school corporation says everyone was safe inside the schools and there was no threat inside the buildings.
Kentucky State Police said a murder happened on Wise Lane around 12:40 p.m. The suspect in that murder, 51-year-old Jesse Kilgus, was shot by police outside John Hardin High School. He was going to the school to pick up a student. Several Departments responded to the school and the suspect was stopped in the parking lot in a vehicle.
"He didn't get into the school, the kid didn't come out of the school, we got there quickly, they went into lockdown, and it’s unfortunate how it turned out but we believe through practice and communication some great things happened today as well," Jeff Gregory, with the Kentucky State Police, said.
KSP said seven officers in total fired a gun at the suspect, three were from the Radcliff Police Department, three from the Hardin County Sheriff's Office and one state trooper.
The school system said the schools were put on lockdown after Kentucky State Police authorized them to do so.
"We'd like to just reassure parents that never at any time, during any of this, were any students in any danger," John Wright, with Hardin County Schools, said.
