LOUISVILLE, Ky. — TSA officers stopped 49 handguns at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) in 2023, officials announced Friday.
With the exception of 2020, when 17 handguns were stopped at the airport, TSA officials detected between 25 and 55 handguns at Louisville's airport each year since 2019.
The most guns ever detected by TSA officers at Louisville's airport was in 2022, when 53 guns were stopped.
Another large airport in Kentucky, Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International (CVG), broke their record last year for firearms stopped by TSA officers with a whopping 54 guns discovered.
This is the fifth consecutive year the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Airport has had an increase in guns found at its TSA checkpoint.
Altogether, a total of 119 firearms were discovered at Kentucky's five airports in 2023, matching a previous statewide record set in 2021. Each of the firearms were discovered by TSA officers during the routine screening of carry-on property at airport security checkpoints.
