Heads up, Kentucky drivers: Vision tests will soon be required to renew your driver's license

A law passed in 2021 will go into effect next year. It requires every driver to take a vision assessment when renewing their license.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There are changes coming for Kentucky drivers looking to renew their license.

The Bluegrass State will now require a vision test every time you renew your license beginning in 2025.

A law passed in 2021 requires this process, but on Thursday, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced it will be fully implemented by 2025.

"Maybe it can reduce the accident rate or something," said Louisville college student Youssef Sheta. "I think it's valid."

Another motorist WHAS11 spoke to Thursday agreed.

"I think it will be a good thing because people need to be able to see when they're driving," said west Louisville resident Sheila Jacobs.

It was a slow day at the KYTC Diver License Renewal Office - Nina Center, so it was the perfect time for Jacobs to renew her license. She said she wasn't aware of the legislation that required a vision screening.

"I didn't know anything about that because I have to have my eyes checked every year," Jacobs said. "Every time I've had to renew I've never had a vision test."

Jacobs is on board with the change and so is Sheta.

"Because people can have any accident or incidents when their vision is reduced," Sheta said.

In Frankfort the transportation cabinet announced that the 2021 law, which requires vision screenings when renewing your license, will now be enforced next year. The KYTC department of vehicle regulation commissioner, Matt Cole, made that announcement beside Kentucky State Police and AAA.

"I want to share one statistic that underlies this mission," Cole said. "National research shows that drivers with visional field loss in both eyes are 84% more likely to be involved in a crash."

The requirement is already in effect in neighboring states Indiana and Ohio. Cole said this measure will ensure drivers will maintain good vision when they're behind the wheel.

"If you do fail a vision screening at a driver's license regional office, you will be referred to a visual specialist for further evaluation," Cole said.

You have two choices: a free test at your local office where you can use your glasses, or you can request your eye doctor sign a state provided form you can present to a clerk.

Since Jacobs already receives a vision screening before reaching the office, she has no issue with the change.

"Because I have a stigmatism and just have to have my eyes checked every year," Jacobs said. "Plus I'm elderly."

So don't be blind-sided when you see the new testing device during your next license renewal visit. Driver license branches will accept vision tests completed within a year before your renewal.
