Wayside Christian Mission honors homeless veterans

According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 11 percent of the homeless adult population are veterans.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) — Wayside Christian Mission will honor homeless veterans at 1 p.m. today at Hotel Louisville.

The veterans will enjoy a free et luncheon, followed by a program. Down by the Wayside Choir will open the program, after which Sgt. James Ziegler will bring words of encouragement and a brief devotion.

According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 11 percent of the homeless adult population are veterans. 51 percent of homeless veterans have disabilities, and 70 percent have substance abuse problems.

Veterans will have an opportunity to share experiences and will receive recognition for their service. The program will close with a dance party, featuring the VT Revue live band.

Wayside Christian Mission has programming specific to homeless veterans, housing both male and female veterans, some of which are accompanied by their families.
