West Nile Virus identified in Floyd County, here's what you need to know

No human cases have been identified.

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. — Editors note: The video in this story is from a previous time where West Nile Virus was detected in Floyd County.

West Nile Virus (WNV) has once again been detected in Floyd County, according to a release from the Floyd County Health Department.

This isn't the first time in the past few months WNV has been detected in the county. There have multiple cases of flies carrying WNV in southern Indiana throughout the summer.

According to the release, the Floyd County Health Department was notified by the Indiana Health Department about one pool of mosquitoes with WNV in the county.

The sample of the virus was collected the week of Sept. 30 during routine county-wide mosquito sampling.

No human cases have been identified.

Most people who become infected with WNV can experience mild illness such as fever, headache, and body aches before recovering fully, the release said.

However, in some people ,especially the elderly and immune compromised, WNV can cause serious illness and even death.

The health department says those in Floyd County should continue to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites by using repellants, wearing protective clothing such as long sleeves and pants, and avoid being outside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active if possible.

They also say homeowners should also be aware and correct sources of mosquito breeding sites like clogged gutters, old tires, failing septic systems, abandoned/nonfunctional swimming pools, and other water containing items.

They say to also be mindful about maintaining overgrown grass, shrubs, and trees where mosquitoes may be during the day.
