LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Western Kentucky University students are cycling coast to coast to raise money for Alzheimer’s research.

Members of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity left San Francisco 6 weeks ago, averaging about 65 miles a day and will arrive in Virginia Beach next week.

The cyclists held a fundraiser dinner at King Fish on Sunday.

Tara Howard says her son Jacob and his fraternity brothers have braved rain, sleet, hail and even snow and ice throughout their journey but keep pushing each other to the finish line.

“They are there supporting each other and keep pushing and obviously they remember the cause and why they are doing this – and that’s a push for each of them as well,” she said.

The fraternity hopes to raise $70,000 this summer to donate to Alzheimer’s research.

This is the 7th summer that a group from WKU FIJI men has biked for the cause and the previous 6 trips have donated a combined $300,000.
