LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A woman died in the hospital Wednesday shortly after she suffered an apparent medical emergency while driving on a Louisville interstate, leading to a crash.
At about 9:20 a.m., Louisville Metro police responded to a crash on the exit ramp from I-265 to Preston Highway, according to an LMPD news release.
Investigators believe a driver was exiting onto the off ramp to Preston Highway when she suffered an apparent medical emergency. She and the vehicle continued up the ramp, entering the intersection at Preston Highway.
The vehicle then struck several highway roadway sign, crossed over the concrete median and collided with another car, driven by a man waiting at the red light.
EMS and Okolona Fire were dispatched to the scene. The woman was taken to UofL Hospital where she was admitted in "critical" condition, authorities said. She died in the hospital a few hours after her arrival.
The man driving the other car was taken to UofL Health – South Hospital where authorities say they expect him to survive.
LMPD's Traffic Unit is handling the investigation. The coroner has not yet released the identity of the driver who died.
