Workwell Industries launches first glass recycling program in Kentucky

The President and CEO said the project will help create up to 10 jobs, which will go towards those with disabilities.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky's governor welcomed the state's first official glass recycling program on Wednesday.

The project at Workwell Industries in the Portland neighborhood will help recycle glass bottles into clean and sustainable ones. It's aimed at Kentucky's vital bourbon industry and its glass bottles and containers.

The president and CEO, Kenya Freeman, said the project will help create up to 10 jobs, which will go towards those with disabilities.

The company prides itself on providing work to people with disabilities.

Freeman said the work they do in the Portland neighborhood is crucial to the community.

"We're the largest employer in this community, so when we are low on work and don't have a lot of outsourced work to us, then our economy fails because my employees don't have anywhere to prosper," Freeman said.

The initiative aims to recycle 1,200 tons of glass within its first year.
