LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It's a holiday tradition here in Kentuckiana — Zoneton Fire Protection District just unveiled their newly decorated firetruck!
Zoneton said this year's "Santa Truck" is decked out with more than 80,000 lights to bring Santa through the community. It takes roughly two weeks to prepare the fire truck with lights, special effects equipment, sound systems and additional generators for power, according to a news release. Last year, the fire department said they needed four generators to provide enough power.
They have selected "Mickey Mouse" as the theme of their firetruck this year, according to their Facebook page.
This tradition has been around for 26 years and firefighters said they love to see how much its grown.
“We see thousands of people each year," Capt. Steve Corbin, event coordinator, said. "It is very heartwarming to see how much our community appreciates this event. We know many people who plan get-togethers around the Santa truck coming to their street.”
The truck will travel on 14 different days this holiday season. On each of those days, starting around 6:00 p.m. (weather permitting), firefighters will load Santa and a crew of elves on the truck and spend some three hours visiting neighborhoods.
Zoneton was one of the first departments to bring Santa to neighborhoods on a decorated firetruck, according to news release.
“There have been many other fire departments who have created their own Santa trucks after seeing our success,” Corbin said.
