FRANKFORT, Ky. — A Frankfort, Ky. man says he plans to retire after he won $1 million on a Kentucky Lottery Scratch-off ticket.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought the $30 Mega Millionaire Scratch-off ticket on April 28 from the Kroger on US 127 Hwy South in Frankfort.
Instead of scratching the ticket off, he scanned the barcode to see if it was a winner. The message "see KLC Corp" popped up on the screen.
“I said, ‘well this is going to be a pretty good one.’” he said.
The man scratched the ticket off to see how much he had won. The winning ticket matched the number three and located below was the game’s $1 million top prize.
“I thought I was dreaming, and I was going to wake up,” he said.
The man said he already had plans with his daughter that day, so he headed over to her house.
“When I walked in, I handed her the ticket. ‘Look at this, am I dreaming,’” he asked. “I looked at it, and said, ‘does that really say a million,’” his daughter said.
The Franklin County man showed up at lottery headquarters in Louisville the next day, where he chose to take the lump sum cash payment of $871,000 and received $627,120 after taxes.
“I’ve been planning to retire but didn’t have the financial means to do it and now I do.” He said he will pay off his house and he looks forward to golfing more in his spare time.
Kroger will receive $8,710 for selling the winning ticket.
